What is a leap year, and why do they happen? Everything to know about Leap Day

Why is Leap Day in February? It's because of ancient Roman history that Leap Day falls in February. Texas wildfires, including second-largest on record, rage across Panhandle

Image
CANADIAN, Texas, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Richard Murray choked back tears on Wednesday as he surveyed the charred remains of his mechanic's workshop and home of 50 years in the small Texas Panhandle town of Canadian. The previous night a sheriff's deputy had pounded on the door and ordered Murray and his wife Gilissa to evacuate as the state's second-largest wildfire on record approached their home. "The house is gone and all the cars are melted," said Murray, 72, shortly after he returned home Wednesday morning. "There's nothing left."The wildfire, raging northeast of Amarillo since Monday, has blackened 850,000 acres (344,000 hectares) of grasslands and timber since Monday and spread eastward across the border of Oklahoma, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported. At least one person, an 83-year-old woman in Hutchinson County, was reported by local media to have died in the blaze, dubbed the Smokehouse Creek fire. Firefighters had managed to car

Richard Lewis, Acerbic Comedian and Character Actor, Dies at 76

After rising to prominence for his stand-up act, he became a regular in movies and TV, most recently on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Richard Lewis, the stand-up comedian who first achieved fame in the 1970s and ’80s with his trademark acerbic, dark sense of humor, and who later parlayed that quality into an acting career that included movies like “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” and a recurring role as himself on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” died on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. Who is the real Nikki Haley?': South Carolina voters criticize mixed messages on racism. Title: Unraveling the Enigma of Nikki Haley: South Carolina Voters Express Concerns Over Mixed Messages on Racism As the political landscape in South Carolina continues to evolve, voters are increasingly scrutinizing the persona of one of their most prominent figures: Nikki Haley. Once hailed as a rising star in the Republican Party, Haley's trajectory has been marred by accusations of sending mixed messages on racism, prompting voters to question the authenticity of her stance. Haley's background as the daughter of Indian immigrants initially positioned her as a symbol of diversity and inclusivity. However, her tenure as South Carolina's governor and subsequent roles in the Trump administration have raised eyebrows. Critics argue that Haley's alignment with President Trump's policies and rhetoric, including his controversial remarks on race, have undermined her image as

Border Patrol releases hundreds of migrants at a bus stop after San Diego runs out of aid money

Image
SAN DIEGO — Hundreds of migrants were dropped off Friday at a San Diego bus stop instead of at a reception center that had been serving as a staging area because it ran out of local funding sooner than expected, showing how even the largest city on the country's southern border is struggling to cope with the unprecedented influx of people. Migrants who previously had a safe place to charge phones, use the bathroom, eat a meal and arrange to head elsewhere in the U.S. were now left on the street as migrant aid groups scrambled to help out as best they could with makeshift arrangements. Border Patrol buses carrying migrants from Senegal, China, Ecuador, Rwanda and many other countries arrived outside a transit center. Migrant aid groups said they would be bused from there to a parking lot where they could charge their phones and get a ride to the airport. The vast majority planned to spend only a few hours in San Diego before taking a flight or having someone pick them up. read

Republicans want no part of Haley. If you want Biden to win, you should thank them for that.

Haley, a former South Carolina governor and a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is a skilled politician with experience governing a state and representing the United States on the global stage. She seems kind of reasonable and has zero accusations of trying to lead a political coup after losing a presidential election. Her followers don’t wave “Haley” flags more than American ones. She isn’t trying to sell footwear to help pay legal bills and she has, to my knowledge, never even been accused of rape. read more..

COLUMBIA, S.C. − Former president Donald Trump, campaigning in South Carolina Friday, brought the issue of race into the campaign by comparing his legal battles to the injustices Black Americans face in the legal system and saying Black voters would prefer him over his predecessor, "Black president" Barack Obama. Speaking to an audience of mostly Black Americans, Trump suggested − inaccurately − that he is popular with African American voters. He said his 91 criminal indictments and mug shot were part of the reason. "A lot of people said that’s why the Black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against," he told an event sponsored by the Black Conservative Federation where about two-thirds of the crowd were Black Americans and one third were white people. "It’s been pretty amazing but possibly, maybe, there’s something there,” he said of his theory that his

Judge formally says Trump owes $454 million in civil fraud case, countdown starts for him to put up the money for appeal

Image
A New York judge on Friday formally ordered Donald Trump to pay $454 million, including interest, a move that will give the former president one month to post nearly half a billion dollars to appeal the fraud verdict. Judge Arthur Engoron’s signed judgment was posted to the court docket Friday, one week after he found Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump liable for fraud in the civil case brought by New York Attorney General Letita James. read more... The sons were each ordered to pay $4 million back in gains they improperly received because of the fraud.

A migrant who piloted a boat where four passengers drowned in the English Channel has been sentenced to nine years and six months. Ibrahima Bah was convicted of manslaughter on Monday over the deaths of the migrants who were on a dingy he steered during an attempted crossing. The judge sentenced Bah on the basis he is "about 20 years old". Bah, whose exact age is in dispute, will serve two-thirds of his sentence in custody. He will be detained in a Young Offenders Institution, until it is determined he has reached the age of 21, which is when he will be moved to adult custody. The case is the first time a migrant who navigated an inflatable has been found responsible for harm caused to other occupants, the BBC's home and legal correspondent, Dominic Casciani, said. Shamima Begum loses bid to regain UK citizenship

Image
Shamima Begum has lost an appeal against a decision to revoke her UK citizenship. The Court of Appeal ruling means the 24-year-old must remain in Syria. The government stripped her citizenship on national security grounds in 2019. Ms Begum left London nine years ago aged 15 to travel to Syria and join Islamic State group, or IS. The ruling by three appeal judges was unanimous. It could still be challenged in the Supreme Court by Ms Begum. Her solicitor, Daniel Furner said that her legal team was "not going to stop fighting until she does get justice and until she is safely back home". However the judges wholly dismissed all of Ms Begum's arguments - a highly significant rejection that could affect her ability to gain a full appeal at the Supreme Court. Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr said: "It could be argued the decision in Ms Begum's case was harsh. It could also be argued that Ms Begum is the author of her own misfortune. "But it is not for this

Hero Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine may have given away his location in call to former lover before he was found riddled with bullets in Spain after being gunned down by 'Kremlin hit squad'

The defecting Russian military helicopter pilot gunned down in Spain this week may have given away his location to hitmen with a phonecall inviting his ex-girlfriend to visit him in Alicante, it has been revealed. Captain Maksim Kuzminov was found riddled with bullets in an underground car park in Villajoyosa near Alicante earlier this month following what is feared to have been a Kremlin-orchestrated hit. The 28-year-old had made himself a target of Russian death squads by fleeing his homeland last August in a stolen Mi-8 helicopter and landing it in a Ukrainian military airfield. Living under a new identity in Spain - and enriched by the Ukrainians after his defection - he had set about building a new life for himself free from the horrors of war. But he is believed to have made a fatal mistake in contacting a former flame and inviting her to his new address. 'We know he had invited an ex-girlfriend to Spain and afterwards he was found dead.
